Safety in confined spaces

The legislation defines confined space as any environment characterized by limited access or exit routes, in which the risk of death or serious injury is very high due to the presence of dangerous substances or conditions (e.g. lack of oxygen or the presence of harmful gases).

Some typologies are easily identifiable by the presence of small openings, as in the case of tanks, silos, closed drainage systems, sewer systems.

Other types of confined spaces, not as easy to identify but equally dangerous, are: open cisterns, vasche, combustion chambers inside furnaces, piping, environments with insufficient or no ventilation.

Anyone working in confined spaces and environments must have adequate safety and recovery systems and suitable personal protective equipment.
